Emigrating to Spain – part 3- Portsmouth to Bilbao with Brittany Ferries

Our final leg- Bob leaves his extended family behind, and with Tigger in his (large) cage and a Mercedes Vito that is full to burst we head to Portsmouth.

The ferry to Spain is the longer duration one- leaving at around 11pm at night, calling into Roskoff (France) for a crew change the next morning. Once a complete crew change, the ferry then makes its way onto Bilbao. Arriving in the morning, the team then head across Spain, using the reverse route of that taken by Andy the week before.

If you are travelling with a pet, the pet friendly cabins on Brittany ferries are the easiest and least stressful way of travelling with a pet. Typically if you look at the prices, the amount extra it costs for the ferry and the cabin, you save by not having 2 nights in a hotel to pay for, the additional fuel and the additional tolls. The tolls each way for this journey came to less than 40 euros. It´s definitely a viable option- and not so much driving.

Once you land at Bilbao (or Santander), you are looking at between 8 and 10 hours driving to get to the Southern Costa Blanca/ Costa Calida areas of Spain.
