Vitoria Gasteiz, Basque Country, Spain

We head into Spain´s Basque Country, in the North of Spain via Ryanair.

We spend 2 nights, exploring this ancient city with lots of charm, food, several Churches and TWO cathedrals.

There is a lot of charm in this town, and a LOT of history. The flights were around 120euro return for both of us, including priority and 10kg hand luggage.

This is different to the usual towns in Spain, wherein you don´t get a tapa/ nuts/ olives with your drinks. Not one bar provided anything like that. It appears that a local “speciality” is making Spanish omelette/ Tortilla de patatas with various toppings. It wasn´t unusual to see several options available in the bars and cafes. There was a distinct lack of “touristy shops” selling the usual items (“tat”) you can buy such as fridge magnets, mugs, etc. The weather was a LOT better than we expected, not needing multiple layers every day.

Where we stayed (EXCELLENT location): https://www.booking.com/hotel/es/casadelosarquillos.en.html?aid=8013803

The airport bus: https://www.autobuseslaunion.com/en/vitoria-airport/ -we recommend that you book this in advance. One bus allocated for one plane…. but taxis are available for the short journey, if required.

Where we ate:
Le Basque: Mussels, Osobuco Croquettas, fantastic potato chips/ crisps and some Prawn Skewers. Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/gEKyZBFfyE613wiD9
Bar Txiki: Located in the Mercado de Abasto, we had Spanish Tortilla topped with Bolognese sauce; croquettas and crispy belly pork. Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/7ifYFqZ7Lp1VCerL7
Restaurante Arkupe: Thinly sliced cured Wagyu, a variety of home made croquettas (Squid with ink, crab, ham and cheese (we suspect goats cheese)), tarte de morcilla, Cod Pil-Pil (not a fan, we left it) carillada and some regional desserts. Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xDNgDzk1Sn3vmfPFA
And finally, we called for breakfast and coffee at Berladi No. 5: Here we had an amazing Spanish omlette, topped with alioli, cheese, ham and bacon- was fantastic. Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6cVADwMB8GUzRawo6
